How to raise a responsible citizen
How does one become a good citizen of his country? It is when one never forgets the values, traditions, culture and language of one’s land of birth, though this one maybe thousands of miles from home.
Parents should instill in their children not just love for God and for family, but love for others and for country as well. Bringing up children is like planting a tree, where you allow the right values to deeply and firmly take root in a young child’s life.
You make a child receptive to such teachings in many ways:
- Inculcate the values and tradition by bringing them to the parents’ root place to meet old relatives to learn their way of life and traditions.
- Teach them to be God-fearing. In this case they will not do anything that can hurt the family and the country as well.
- Revive old values like respect of the elderly.
- Tell stories. In raising a child it would be best for them to introduce to anything associated with the country like the flag in storytelling manner. Explain things in language a child can easily understand. Parents should not be peeved with a child’s inquisitiveness or asking too many questions.
- Expose children to the different sights and sounds of the country. Visit local tourist spots or show pictures of different places and read books about the country to inspire nationalism to their children.
“I like to see a man proud of the place in which he lives. I like to see a man live so that his place will be proud of him.” ~Abraham Lincoln
