A Gratitude to the Teachers

Teaching is the profession that teaches all the other professions.  ~Author Unknown

A Teacher is considered to be the second parent of the child while in school. Parents trust their child to be in good hands with the care of their teacher.  And as a teacher they are expected to educate the child, to mold and develop his/her potentials to become a good citizen and/or be the next leader of a nation, to learn the value of respect and be respected.

We know that it is not  an easy task to handle so many children in one classroom, when we as parents sometimes lost our patience when our child become unruly or stubborn and very hard to discipline. There’s a saying “If you don’t love children you don’t belong in this job” because it will take a lot of  understanding and tolerance to deal with children. Hence it is regarded as a noble and selfless profession.

Teen stage – Parents are you ready

If you think taking care of babies and toddlers is hard, think again when they reach their adolescent stage (puberty or teen stage). This is the stage where they learn to socialize and want to be with their friends or group of same age level. Some trying to be independent and want to have their own space (like having their own bedroom).

So here are some of the changes that parents should know how to handle:

  • Children are concrete thinkers, that is “to see is to believe“. Keep this fact in mind when disciplining pubescent children. For instance, to discourage smoking, tell them what could happen to them now – dark lips and gums, yellowish teeth and breath like exhaust car.
  • Feeling of greatness – adolescent pass through the stage of psuedo-stupidity stage, that feeling of terribly important. Parents should never put them down because it will hurt their self-esteem. Instead, encourage them even if their ideas are seems so far out.
  • Center Stage – Teeners also go through imaginary audience stage. It’s conviction that everyone is looking at them and eavesdropping on every word they are saying. And when you correlate this with the physical changes, you can imagine how a child must feel. Thus, a small pimple can seem to be as huge as a mountain, and girls will try to hide their budding breasts by hunching their back. Making endless chat on the phone in their room becomes a way to talk without anyone seeing them.
  • Feeling of Invincibility – the conviction that bad things can happen to others but never to them. This belief puts adolescents into risky behavior. They feel like supermen or superwomen. They think they can drink and drive or engage in premarital sex without meeting an accident.

Through all these, parents must have a constant communication with the children. It’s not so much WHAT you communicate as HOW you communicate. Don’t be preachy or authoritative. Don’t be too permissive or too strict.

Your children still need your guidance at this time, but your parenting task will basically done when they were kids. Support your child but ” let him face the consequences of his actions”. You cannot save your child all the time.

Preparedness count a lot

Tsunami alerts were lifted, although the expected aftermath of the Chile’s massive earthquake last Saturday hit Japan and Russia, it was not as big as expected and create small or no damage at all. Thank God!

Tale of two Earthquakes

The magnitude on Chile’s earthquake was stronger than those that happened in Haiti, but the casualties are much much lower, because Chile is prepared, having experience disaster very often, they have building codes that are earthquake resistant, unlike those in Haiti where they did not experience any earthquake till last January. The homes and buildings are poorly constructed and the people were not taught on how to react in this kind of situation. The country is very poor and rely heavily on other nations for help. On the other hand, Chile is a rich country, and can stand on their own.
Now we see the advantages of being prepared when catastrophe struck, of how many lives and properties can be saved by simply knowing what to do when faced with danger.
Every citizen must be ready and prepared when tragedy strike.
Schools are the primary source of information, teachers should teach school children all the basics steps in case of emergency, to be calm and not panic to prevent getting hurt and to avoid casualties. At home, adults, parents and guardians must do the same.
